Tron: Legacy; a review.
Just like my absolute surprise when being introduced to Dr Who, I kept seeing the trailers of Tron: Legacy, and thinking what is it ABOUT? I don’t get it! I tried watching the original Tron, and skipping through a few frames, and I was sure that I couldn’t enjoy it. Nope. Not for me. I may work in IT, but I have boundaries!
But, boy have I changed my mind.
I cannot get over how much fun I had watching this film. From the beginning Tron-ised Disney graphic introduction, and the amazing score/soundtrack by Daft Punk, I had that sense of wonder, and the wide-eyed ‘oh! I’m already feeling this world’ kind of feeling. It doesn’t happen very often. Where you get immersed into the world before the story even starts. (I think I felt that last with Inception)
To try and describe the storyline might confuse you more or turn you off, so I might not even try. Or, maybe I’ll vaguely and oh so intriguingly say its about a boy, who loses his tech-entrepreneurial father into the ‘Grid’, and 20+ years later, finds him again. Or does he? Oh, and there are shiny, lit up body suits. Okay, that doesn’t even nearly do it justice. At all. Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde are just magnetic, and electric (pardon the puns) in their roles in what would be such a hard role to lose themselves in considering all of the amazing graphics, and special effects involved. Also, a Labyrinthine-David Bowie-esque performance by Michael Sheen cannot be ignored. Cannot.
Whether it be the ‘game’ scenes with the light cycles, or the fight scenes where the identity ‘disks’ that are then a weapon are surprisingly riveting, and so wondrous considering the outlandish-ness and just how completely unlike anything I’ve come across. The movie, the experience, the sounds still lingers with me. It does live up to all the buzz, and hype that original Tron geeks told me about! Readers, I’m quite worried at how ‘nerdy’ I’ve become. What next, Star Trek?!
