Tron: Legacy; a review.

Just like my absolute surprise when being introduced to Dr Who, I kept seeing the trailers of Tron: Legacy, and thinking what is it ABOUT? I don’t get it! I tried watching the original Tron, and skipping through a few frames, and I was sure that I couldn’t enjoy it. Nope. Not for me. I may work in IT, but I have boundaries!

But, boy have I changed my mind.

I cannot get over how much fun I had watching this film. From the beginning Tron-ised Disney graphic introduction, and the amazing score/soundtrack by Daft Punk, I had that sense of wonder, and the wide-eyed ‘oh! I’m already feeling this world’ kind of feeling. It doesn’t happen very often. Where you get immersed into the world before the story even starts. (I think I felt that last with Inception)

To try and describe the storyline might confuse you more or turn you off, so I might not even try. Or, maybe I’ll vaguely and oh so intriguingly say its about a boy, who loses his tech-entrepreneurial father into the ‘Grid’, and 20+ years later, finds him again. Or does he? Oh, and there are shiny, lit up body suits. Okay, that doesn’t even nearly do it justice. At all. Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde are just magnetic, and electric (pardon the puns) in their roles in what would be such a hard role to lose themselves in considering all of the amazing graphics, and special effects involved. Also, a Labyrinthine-David Bowie-esque performance by Michael Sheen cannot be ignored. Cannot.

Whether it be the ‘game’ scenes with the light cycles, or the fight scenes where the identity ‘disks’ that are then a weapon are surprisingly riveting, and so wondrous considering the outlandish-ness and just how completely unlike anything I’ve come across. The movie, the experience, the sounds still lingers with me. It does live up to all the buzz, and hype that original Tron geeks told me about! Readers, I’m quite worried at how ‘nerdy’ I’ve become. What next, Star Trek?!

What are you talking about? You’ve seen Star Trek right??

Did you go back and watch original Tron? There are some wonderful nods to the original in Legacy

Well I’ve seen the Chris Pine/Zach Quinto Star Trek? Don’t ask me to see Shatner/Nimoy Trek!!! I can’t!

Well I may go back and try to see original Tron but… it may be SO dated, I don’t know if I can!

Loved the review! I was so caught up in reading it. The blogs written in a great way that it doesn’t give anything away. It’s a mystery, yet you’ve still managed to talk up the movie. It’s like you’ve sold me something that I don’t even know what it’s about. Nice one! I’ll be watching it soon, that’s for sure.

So delayed in replying…! this was the biggest compliment ever. If only I could frame comments like these ; though that’d be a bit vain. Seriously, huge compliment. I do hope you catch it! SO can’t wait for the super fantastical DVD box set! :)

Great review Kimberley – I bought the Blu-Ray this month as hadn’t seen the film on the big screen (then missed the IMAX screening *geek cred fades*) and I was RIVETED THE ENTIRE TIME. Of course I grew up on TRON (yep I’m that old :-) but had no idea how they would remake it (or rather, extend the story) It’s so faithful to the original, including the original actor who plated TRON alongside Jeff Bridges.

The icing is the soundtrack – amazing! I even bought the CD this week – haven’t bought a CD forever. Listening to it on the morning commute is just fantastic. They apparently filmed TRON Legacy to the soundtrack, hence how embedded it feels. Perfect.

Thanks for allowing me to share my thoughts on TRON Legacy – will be watching it again soon: if only my girls were as interested! :-)

I know what you mean; the soundtrack was amazing! I’m not a techno-lover, but it did feel embedded. I was just riveted from that first Disney Tron-logo. :) I’m SURE your girls would love it, how old are they?!

Tween and a teen – I’ll encourage them, thanks! I also loved Jeff Bridges voiceover at the beginning – he’s fantastic: you can hear it in the opening moments of this music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzSffy7Vc1Y
