Thoughts on… Glee season 2.

To say that this post has been a long time coming is an understatement. I honestly felt that from an early part of Glee’s sophomore season, that something had shifted in the Gleekdom. Something didn’t feel the same way as with the 1st. The joy, and the actual glee I felt before, during and after the episodes was missing.

Where do I start? Each time that I had an obviously informal chat with fellow Gleeks, there were barely any coherent words to convey the disappointment I’ve had with the plot and character continuity of the season. Most of the responses I had contained sounds that might be conveyed as ‘argh. Urgh. Grrrr!’ and such. You get what I mean. Where did it all go wrong? I have a few bullet points. Maybe you care to add to these;

  • The songs became primary to the story, rather than a supporting factor.
  • Character development and continuity; what?
  • Event episodes
  • Emma just getting married like that, to a dentist, and then, oh getting a quickie divorce in the background. Nice use of John Stamos, or weak comeback ploy?
  • Quinn had a baby. Pretty much never got mentioned, nor she only seemed to get bitchier in the second season.
  • Kurt became the poster boy for ‘Born This Way’ and from then, any sort of ‘message’ episode really hinged on how Kurt was feeling. He became the ultimate hero, and anyone that might have sneered at him became homophobic. Including Finn.
  • Finn became needy and possessive, a skirt-chaser if you will and it was never clear why he liked Rachel or why he liked Quinn (or how he could get back with her after, I don’t know, having someone else’s baby)
  • Puck became the biggest cliché of a school bad boy, he was practically Fonzie. A 1960’s bad boy and barely one that would be ‘bad’ in say, 90210.
  • Artie and Brittany. REALLY?
  • Will became way too wrapped up in ‘winning’. Oh, and at one point, directly alluding to Brittany’s intellect. Hmmm. Nice teachering there, Schuester.
  • Jesse St James’ return. WHY?! Why bother really. It was just grasping at straws to give closure to Jesse and Rachel’s romance, and what; he was in the finale for all of 2 minutes?

These are huge in my book, particularly plot being secondary to the song choice alone. And when did it become okay to release songs and/or video of the songs before the actual episode. The element of surprise is a lost pleasure. I know, I know in the realm of the interwebs where nothing can be secret or shocking for more than 12 hours (whatever time zone you may be in) you still had ways of avoiding it. Not really the case when Fox happily promotes the upcoming ‘event’ song of the next episode, and not even a teaser, but the full deal. Out of context, they don’t care. It becomes about the song, the performance and which artist/band gave Glee rights to have the Glee stars cover their work. It just infuriates me to no end about how the Jesse/Rachel storyline was just.. thrown out. Or how Mercedes just became a minor supporting role, Tina and Mike Chang became the token random couple, cute because they were of the same ethnicity?

Quinn became a bitch without a cheerleader’s uniform, and there was no reference, really whatsoever to the fact that she had a baby and just happened to give it to Rachel’s birth mum. Kind of a turning point in a young adolescent’s life wouldn’t you think?

All I can think is that Glee has become about money, and about iTunes. It works, sure. Most of my iPod IS Glee, but when I think of the show I was JOYFUL about in season 1, and glad to be a fan of, I surprise people by being objective and saying Glee deserves little credit for anything this season.

Okay, fine, here I am in comments! :P

Right: First of all – valid points I agree with you on:

Emma/Dentist marriage – true, it was a lame way to bring in a guy who could have done so much more, in John Stamos.
Schuester’s winning obsession – also agree, we lost the Will – but I don’t know if this wasn’t actually a good bit of character revelation. In S2, New Directions wasn’t just a bit of fun and get together – they actually had a chance at winning, so Schuester’s obsession is validated by the different perception he holds the Glee club in.
Jesse St James – they should have left him out – his appearance just made me want to punch him in the face.

    Disagreements:

Songs have always been essential to the story, this wasn’t new in S2. Remember the Gaga/Kiss episode and others like that in S1?

Character development was excellent. The character depth and plot in Season 1 was what let it down for me. Every character was a token character:
    Season 1 Kurt: Gay
    Season 1 Finn: Jock
    Season 1 Rachel: Diva
    Season 1 Mercedes: Black
     - Season 1, they were all one dimensional. Season 2 we saw more of them. Real people are layered, they’re hypocritical at times, they’re complex and tormented. I loved seeing the characters develop through Season 2.

Quinn: I love her, I would have fallen in love with her if she’d been in my high school. The minimal reference to the baby – I agree with you on. The bitchiness? It makes sense – her identity had previously been in the Cheerios and the uniform. When she lost that, she fell back to what she knew – who she was before Glee club.

Kurt – Went through a great transition this season, he grew stronger, more confident, and more comfortable in who he was. He was no longer just ‘gay’ he was a gay young man – a person.

Finn – missed him above, I agree with you here – he annoyed me this season.

Puck, I don’t see how you got this out of him. He’s a bad boy, but this season he wasn’t so much the bad boy like he was in S1, again. We saw him grow as well, especially during his attempts to woo Lauren. It was a bit of a let down, though, to see him come all this way in being a ‘real’ human when Quinn was pregnant, and that seemed to disappear in S2.

Artie and Brittany: Best couple on Glee to date. Period.

Tina and Mike Chang: Probably only came across this way because they spent most of the season as background characters to pretty much everyone else.

    ——

    Things you didn’t mention:

Santana – WOW! Loved her from day one but this season? She became real. From one dimensional bitch to bitch because of issues in her own personality and self-acceptance. Loved seeing more of her this season, loved hearing her solo.

Sam/Chord Overstreet: At first, I was worried that he’d just be another Finn – and he kind of was, but since Finn was busy being an annoying, needy little whimp,Sam filled his place – the difficulties with his life were very good.
     - Which also points out that Kurt wasn’t the only focal point for message episodes. Sam, Santana both had their issues, among others.

Yes to all of that. Although I did think Artie and Brittany were kinf of cute. And Brittany was pretty much the only character to achieve any sort of growth/maturity.

Oh, and I reeeeeally hope they get rid of Lauren Zizes. I find her super flat, a bad actress and feel she doesn’t add anything to the storyline. Puck was showing a bit of maturity last season with Quinn, trying to get her to keep the baby and be a real couple and then…..nothing. So they bring in this secondary character to continue the storyline? Makes no sense.

Still, I’ll keep watching, and buying the music. Because it’s like delicious, delicious crack.

I definitely agree with all of your comments per season two, although  think they did cut down the songs per episode, they seemed to have almost done full covers instead of a verse and a chorus.

I can totally see Glee becoming like Lost, having the writers write script only weeks before filming and airing, it’s bound to bomb trying to keep up to date IRL and keep good focus on characters’ story lines.
Sad they are removing Chord Overstreet as Sam, just after that Mercedes hook up in the finale…

As much as I dislike the way the show is written, I know I can’t look away when it is on. It’s too damn fun!Â
