Introducing: The Horror Movie Challenge

I’m a gal that likes lots of movies. Sure, I’ll always want the latest romantic comedy, or teen movie, or Nicholas Sparks adaptations – but I am a Cinema student, always. I always want to watch new conventions, new ideas based on old plots, new genres, or sub-genres (though thanks to Eli Roth, I may avoid torture!porn).

So with that in mind, I’m embarking on a Horror Movie Challenge. With help of course! I can’t do this alone! Simon Miraudo and Jon Tilton; host on the Trending Cinema podcast and website, and fellow movie junkies are going to watch a few. The list of movies I am going to see was thought up by Simon and Jon’s fervent love of the genre, as well as going through other lists, and coming up with a good cross-section of all the different levels of horror.

Oh boy. What have I signed up for?

Horror movie 1 is Poltergeist, produced by Spielberg, directed by Hooper (guy that did the Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Yet I’m told this is a ‘gentle’ beginning!

Wish me luck..

I love horror movies! Poltergeist is good but I thought #2 was better. Have you also seen – Black Christmas (original version), Alien (?), Eden Lake, When A Stranger Calls (original) & Wolf Creek to name a few. Old skool horror movies are the best though.

    Halloween
    Carrie
    Friday 13th
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remakes are actually quite good)
    The Fly
Saw (although the sequels are gross, they kinda lose the plot)

You should watch Eden Lake – I found it shocking because I thought the story was believable.

How could I forget Nightmare On Elm Street?! Not sure about the remake – it's just not gonna be the same without Heather Langenkamp as Nancy.

  • Kimberley

I love them too – though.. I'm SO easily scared! I'm not watching any of these movies alone either!

Halloween I watched recently, and you know.. I wasn't that scared!

Poltergeist 2 was better? Might have to give that a go!

Ohhh.. I'm SO wary of seeing the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre only because the remake was SO terrifying, I nearly walked out of the cinema!

  • Kimberley

That's what I'm worried about with Eden Lake.. its all too realistic and plausible! Just like 'the Strangers' or Last House on the Left? Not sure.. Gulp!

  • Ant

I reall enjoyed the re-make of Last House On The Left – the original was good but more disturbing!

The Strangers was so creepy. Apparently they're making a sequel. Eeek.

Recently watched Orphan. The twist at the end was good!

sounds like FUN. Be sure to wear your lucky brown underpants!
a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street? Yeeees!
Eden Lake and the Orphan haven't seen, must get those, good?
the hack 'em ups are just grose, its the ones that make you think that freak you out when your trying to get to sleep at night!
    seen Drag Me to Hell?
Wolf Creek made me want to vomit instead of being scared
Saw – first one was the best huh?
The Strangers and Paranormal Activity – i guess you need stupid people in scary movies otherwise they would get away. Micah was a total pain the the butt

  • Kimberley

I saw the start of Eden Lake.. and as I was on my own, I had to switch it off. Bloody scared! (Because its all so plausible!) Hence that, and movies like the Strangers are terrifying!
Hahaha, Micah was a pain in the butt but I still adored him. He just wanted to protect her!

  • Ant

Drag Me To Hell was suprisingly good. Didn't know too much about it before going to watch but I really enjoyed it. It was pretty gross and the script was humourous.

What a wonderful idea for a challenge. I wish you luck! And yes, Poltergeist is a relatively tame beginning.
