First there was Mimi (Mariah Carey), then there was Sasha Fierce (bouncy – I mean, Beyonce) now there is Kathy Beth Terry – the next fierce alter ego that Katy Perry has debuted to the world.
Whilst I thought that Teenage Dream might be my favourite video that Katy Perry has released (let’s not even discuss E.T) – Last Friday Night (TGIF) is brilliant. It rivals I’d say Lady Gaga’s video ‘films’; but in a different way.
Whilst Gaga will always incite discussion over her amazingly abstract choices and Rihanna’s choice of red hair will always puzzle me, Katy Perry has a self-deprecating humour and style that will make her a pop cultural icon. At least in my eyes.
And why? Just look at the ensemble; Darren Criss as most likely the high school heart-throb, Kevin McHale ( known as Artie from Glee) as her fellow braced-up crush, Debbie Gibson (ELECTRIC YOUTH!) and Corey Feldman as her parents?! ZOMG. The only slight criticism I’d have is that her featuring current viral hit Rebecca Black, known for ‘Friday’ will date this video clip more than it should. Only because Rebecca Black is sure to be a one hit wonder. Nobody knows her for her lyrical prowess. Oh wait, they do.
This video featuring Katy Perry AS Kathy Beth Terry; who HAS to just remind you of Drew Barrymore’s high school alter ego in Never Been Kissed just made me GIGGLE. The song itself was already a feel-good dancey track and incited lots of chair shimmying, but now with this multi-era-pleasing (from Debbie Gibson through to Darren Criss!) video, props to Mrs Brand.
