I label this First Watch, as I’m now sure that still, several days after watching the Hunger Games that I need to see it again. It still lingers in my mind, and I still wonder about why I’m not unequivocally loving or hating this film. Sure, there might be a bit of disappointment but I’m too analytical to just let it pass without figuring out why.
I did come out on the defensive having seen it with friends (non-hunger games readers) that were flat out annoyed and disappointed with it. I was on the defensive and said no! But it was quite faithful, it just.. skipped past some important details. Or, hmmm there wasn’t as much violence as there should have been. That last statement makes me question things also; since when does more violence make something better?
Whilst the overall themes of the Hunger Games are quite dark and seemingly all about teens fighting to the death, it’s the overall environment and world of Panem and the Capitol that beg delving into.
Of course, the box office draw is the violence; and the girl on fire. But that would have trivialised the appeal of Katniss Everdeen. This is a blessing and a curse, because I have such a love for the literary character, I do feel as if it’s a hard ask to represent her on film for those that know her, and those that are yet to meet yet. Is that completely juvenile? Is that too much to expect for today’s Hollywood?
This is why I need to see it again. Maybe I need to watch it again in order to just, let it wash over me and just lose myself in Panem without thinking so damn much, and appreciate it on its own merit. Right?
