This year has been GREAT for new shows, I must say. Although its also been the year when U.S and Australian networks have been trigger happy, cancelling shows, or taking them off air prematurely. But for me, as much as I’ve wanted to be out and about more (and I have!) I’ve been completely enthralled by certain shows, and number one for this year would definitely have to be True Blood which the subject line comes from, when vampy gentleman Bill Compton (and oh, he’s a real vampire, he don’t sparkle bebe) shows interest in Sookie Stackhouse, a sassy mind-reading waitress in the deep south town of Bon Temps. I just fell in love with this sassy, risque gory show faster than any show in a long time!
There was also the great ‘return’ of Prison Break, which wasn’t necessarily a return after a hiatus, but seriously; season 3 was a hot mess. (Hot, as in really sweaty, even though Michael constantly wore long sleeves!) But the season in Sona, the way they wrote out LJ and the God-awful way they tried to write off Sara (and moreso the treatment of Sarah Wayne Callies) just turned me off. I might even not buy Season 3 to complete the collection, and leave it as a ‘gap’ but I’m probably too pedantic to leave it a gap. But this season’s strong return, a new challenge, and sensing that there was possibly going to be an end to their torture, and suffering, AND Sara returning. Oh the heartbreak of him being ill, some unexpected deaths.. oh man!
Lipstick Jungle has got me hooked. I can’t comment on the fact that it was going to be another Sex and the City because I never really got into that show. Watched a couple of episodes here and there.. but Lipstick Jungle was the one that drew me in, initially it was all about Kirby, but now I’d have to say Victory is my favourite character, style icon.. all of the above. I loved the character development, friendship between the women, and the way they really supported, or even argued with other about certain issues.
Briefly, Chuck and his cohorts, especially M-Organ just made me squeal and laugh, and love all the nerd jokes. Adorable! (I haven’t seen the full season so I can’t really say how much I loved it all over), and Reaper I would have to say introduced me to the most naturally funny guy in Sock (Tyler Labine) that I’ve seen for a good long time. I love the fact that every vessel he had to capture the evil souls was something as ridiculous as a dust buster, or a Christmas jumper!
For musical laughs and sing-alongs, there was the return of Jonny Lee Miller (Angelina’s first hubby) in Eli Stone, which although I don’t think he likes the comparison, but I do think its a less whiney Ally McBeal, not trying *too* hard to be quirky, but just the right amount of drama, comedy, and oh, George Michael. I still can’t get enough of Eli miming, and dancing along to Faith!
I am absolutely hooked on Britannia High right now, a 9 part British series focusing on 6 performing arts students – not just an ordinary series but mixed with them breaking into song and dance, though the show would then turn it into a music clip. Oh, and it brought back my crush on Adam Garcia, the Aussie from Coyote Ugly as a dance teacher. One of the feats of the show was that the main song writer was Gary Barlow of Take That fame, so the soundtrack is pop-tastic, and very catchy!
In regards to reality, I was absolutely hooked on So You Think You Can Dance, and no, hell no I’m not talking about the Australian train wreck of a version, but the amazing season, the music it introduced me too, and I only had maybe… 2 dancers that I thought were ordinary out of 20! Then there was Survivor. Not necessarily the latest season in Gabon, though I had a crush on 3 of the contestants, but Fans vs Favourites was just SUCH a great, twist and turn season (even romantic!) and it brought back James, I must say my biggest crush in oh… 17 seasons! It says a lot that in China, and Fans vs Favourites, he won the ‘fan favourite’ money!
Oh, and Supernatural.. those Winchester lads can do no wrong! Dean coming back from Hell, Sam doing some very mysterious things while he was gone, and great, hilarious stand alone episodes that included Jensen Ackles (or was he still Dean?) doing a kick-ass mime/dance to Eye of the Tiger.
