I love this record, but I can’t see straight anymore

On Friday morning, on one of Australia’s most popular morning programs Sunrise Lady Gaga was set to perform her chart hit Just Dance in front of a live crowd in Federation Square, Melbourne. Just as the she’s set to perform, something happens, there was no sound, and she walked off stage to get help attending to her mic, or the backing track – nothing was said. The hosts, Mel and ‘Kochie’ go to a commercial break, and then come back after advising of technical difficulties. Alarm bells rang.. was this an Ashlee Simpson style lip-sync gone wrong? The show comes back from commercials, and the music starts. She greets the crowd with the standard “Helllooo Melbourne”.. but then.. how do I describe it, the performance was not great at all. Her live voice only seemed to be apparent during certain parts of the song, and then at other times, the studio track was the ‘voice’ we’d hear. It was almost like she’d leave the chorus to the track, and make sure the dancing was good, but then during the verses, try to sing… but the pitch was awful, and it just wasn’t smooth.

This morning I woke up, in a daze and overheard Mel saying on today’s program “Lady Gaga has her say about Friday’s performance”.. I though, oh. So I wasn’t being overly critical..

On Sunrise today, and according to the website, Lady Gaga has said: “I was sick the day of the show but I absolutely, 100% was singing live. I have never lip-synced and never will. Even on my worst day, I never will.”

    I think she needs the backing track *just in case* she misses some lines because of all the dancing? So there’s no blank bits? So she is singing over the top?

    Her Rove performance was a lot better though I thought – I love her funky fashion and “out there”ness – she’s grown on me!

    Oh, but it was bad.. she wasn’t in pitch/tune with the music! And even on Rove, though she was better, she was so breathless..

    (I still love her quirkyness though!)
