90210 – the hotter generation

They have a few more layers and even the bitchy girls give you reason sometimes to like them, and want to root for them.

The hot new generation..

The hot new generation..

Anytime that you hear of a remake, or a ‘re-do’ and it has a subheading such as ‘the new generation’ you’re likely to groan and think why..? Where is the originality?

For a continuation of a generational cult favourite, 90210 had to offer something more – pleasing the original fans, and introducing a new teen show that didn’t have a cast that was double the age of the high school teens they were portraying!

This time around, the characters aren’t necessarily so clearly stereotyped, there’s not just ONE bitch, or not just ONE jock, and such. They have a few more layers and even the bitchy girls give you reason sometimes to like them, and want to root for them.

There’s all round girl next door from Kansas named Annie, eager to please and loves musicals, with her adopted brother Dixon, basketballer but nice guy and not your normal ‘jock’ type, fast friends with Navid the school journalist, and nervous around girls type. Dixon’s love interest is Silver, Kelly Taylor (original 90210 alum’s) baby sister, estranged from her still alcoholic mother, and a sassy blogger. No wonder I love her so much. She’s on the ‘outside’ yet used to be best friends with Naomi, the ‘Bitch’ the beautiful, spoilt little rich girl, who when she misses assignments have her mother come to the school to say she was busy getting ready for a ball. Yet, Naomi has issues.. a cheating father, her best friend Adriana (who eclipses her in bad behaviour) hooked on drugs, and making scenes at any school functions and she’s just lost her boyfriend Ethan. Oh, Ethan the heartthrob of the show, and the guy who Annie had met before in a very Danny Zuko and Sandra Olsson sorta way but as he was attached to Naomi.. the wistful glances across the classroom would continue on for a little while.

That’s it in a nutshell, and it was a slow start with several references to the old cast, and Brenda and Kelly were back, daydreaming about Dylan the father of Kelly’s baby.. but it has really picked up the pace, and has all the ingredients to be a new cult favourite. It has a killer soundtrack, making me want to google just who the bands and songs are that appear in it, it has fashions you’d never see in a realistic high school and makes me wish as a 27 year old woman that I dressed like that. Oh, and teen angst and romance. I’m hooked!
