So we all know I was doing an X Files rewatch just in terms of revisiting my first TV crush, as well as getting some closure on the X Files storyline – as I certainly didn’t get any sort of closure from the 2nd movie (or entertainment for that matter) but you know me. I start a lot of things, don’t quite finish them. Get sidetracked.
But along with Buffy and Angel.. Roswell was one of my biggest obsessions when I was younger. The soundtrack, Max and Liz, Michael and Maria.. Katherine Heigl’s introduction (sooo not Grey’s Anatomy, folks) I’ve been rewatching this from Season 1 (tied in with X Files season 1).
You know what? Its actually not that dated, it does still make me yearn for that epic teenage angsty/loving feelings of will he take me to the prom, and does he notice that I brought him tabasco sauce especially for his pancakes. Its the small things. The only horrific thing that takes away from this nostalgia is for me – I remember songs. I remember them down to the scene they were included in. Sometimes scenes can just be all the more poignant, or haunting because of a particular soundtrack. And with Roswell, as well as Dawson’s Creek – the soundtrack was a trademark. I raise this point because apparently there wasn’t enough in the budget to cover buying the rights to these songs – and so.. when I watch certain scenes in these episodes – the music is DIFFERENT. B-grade, or C-grade ‘who the heck am I listening to?’ different.
Looks like I won’t be throwing out those VHS tapes I recorded back in the day after all (in hopes that the DVD box sets would suffice – as they do with a lot of other shows!)
I often have these moments where I get a delayed light bulb moment. As if someone has switched on the light and it stays dark for a few extended moments before ‘bling!’ lightbulb moment and something clicks into place. I can’t even describe how many times this happens (usually when it comes to the timey wimey wibbly wobbly timeline jumpy stuff in Dr Who, but that’s another post on the boil) but this weekend I just found out there aren’t 10 seasons of X Files.
I guess there were 10 years of X Files? But officially 9 seasons. And I always thought urgh, why haven’t they released the final season on DVD? As soon as Mulder got ‘taken’ in one of the last seasons of the show and they brought in Xena, and the bad Terminator from T2.. I thought nah. Not doing it. Not possible. No Scully AND Mulder? Can’t do it. So I never saw the end of the show. I saw the 2nd movie with much confusion and anger at how Mulder and Scully were romantically linked… and I was like.. What. THE.
So now I know that season 9 was the last season – I’m going to watch from where I left off – I’m going into it with low expectations so perhaps I will be able to be pleasantly surprised. Regardless, I’m still quite Scully skeptical that I would welcome the romance between the two and I think the 2nd movie should never have been made – but.. watch this space for zomg!Mulder type squee posts.

Just when I think Buffy or Angel may be as ‘nerdy’ as I go (though for the longest time, I thought everyone watched those shows!) I have become somewhat hooked on a show that I think may have completely tainted me as a nerd.
A friend of mine was giving away DVDs and box sets that he no longer needed (only to save space, after he’d copied them to his hard drive) and thus I had a bit of a squee bonanza in grabbing some DVDs I wouldn’t have thought to buy but either myself or family/friends would love.
Then I saw the Dr Who box sets. I know these cost a pretty penny (well, anything from BBC is expensive here) so I suggested he sell them on Ebay. Rather than give them away, because I know it has such a following. Then I hesitantly asked; what is all the fuss about? So.. this guy, travels through time? In a phone box? What else? He suggested I watch a particular episode.. and the addiction began.
After that first episode (from Season 3) I had to begin from the start. And no, definitely not the 70s version! Whilst I was a snuffle-upagus with a cold yesterday, I pushed the nerdiest DVD into my DVD player, ever.
Starting with Christopher Eccleston and ole Billie Piper (Cos we want to!) and I’m loving it! Although the ‘aliens’ are quite imaginative (the first episode had walking store mannequins) and a subsequent episode had fake pig-headed aliens. No really, they had pig heads. Talk about swine! But the quirkiness of the Doctor’s character alone, the fantasy element in travelling through time and space, as well as the human elements of the bond between Doctor and Rose Tyler . I’m loving it.
I already feel like my DNA has changed. Will people know? Will they see that now I’ve watched Dr Who? Is it plastered across my forehead like the guilty pleasure of enjoying the High School Musical series?
I have to take comfort in that now, my absolute no-go shows are Battlestar, or any of the Stargate series. THEN.. that’ll be the ultimate dark side! What TV shows equate to your dark side?
