Character Study: Jesse St James

I haven’t done a character study in a while – well, my first was true experimentation (but I felt it was valid). Now, I feel I have to write about a character I unashamedly, love/lust/have a massive crush on – but feel his character was not done justice by way of plots and/or hmm.. very importantly – character continuity.

Due to plot spoilers for the last 2 episodes not yet aired in Australia.. click to continue :)

Dr Owen Hunt (Grey’s Anatomy) – A Character Focus

(Warning: Contains spoilers for those watching on Australian TV – post contains storylines up til episode 5×21)

After watching the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy, leading up to surely a big finale; I felt compelled to write a character study, or character focus  if you will on Dr Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). Many have said that Greys’ ‘jumped the shark’ with the Izzie/Denny returning from the dead storyline. And despite my absolute LOVE of the Denny character; I must admit the writers should/could have written in Izzy’s illness in a better way, rather than have Denny so softly and gracefully state that he was here for Izzy, in a ‘grim reaper’ type way.

Oh, it still chokes me up the way that she said goodbye to him this season..

But I digress! (You’ll find I do that quite often, you’ll get used to it!) From episode one of this season; when Dr Owen Hunt was introduced, performing medical surgery (sort of?)  ‘in the field’ with non medical implements, still in army uniform, he was a standout. From first glance, Cristina Yang was in lust with him (*cough*So Was I*cough) & completely impressed with his no-nonsense attitude, and the way he just had to do what he had to do to save a life. And the way he carried her into the hospital after the pointy icicle fell on her, or.. impaled itself on her? Semantics. Apart from kissing in the rain, I hope to be carried somewhere, like a damsel in distress by a gentleman at some point in my life. Note that down.

Dr Hunt is a complex man; as such, being in Iraq, or being in any warzone and coming back to a non-war zone, this could have been presented quite lazily, with all the usual cliches. Comparatively, as much as I love Brothers & Sisters and as much as I lust after Dave Annable as Justin Walker, the writers haven’t portrayed his coming back home with enough detail; instead, he turned to alcohol and went AWOL to avoid going back. Fair enough, but there was no real.. detail to it.

With Dr Hunt and the way he’s been written, the way Kevin McKidd can just furrow his brow, or look longingly at Cristina, he’s just.. riveting to watch. Because, with him, there are no ‘easy answers’ with him, he’s not a black and white character where he does anything predictably. He doesn’t have a ‘Mc’ anything stamped across his name. He’s just Hunt. Or Owen.  He and Cristina have far more chemistry than she and Dr Burk in S1 or S2 ever had. Hunt has bad dreams, violent dreams, and in a recent episode was choking Cristina; sleep choking. Massively scary. And he’s SO remorseful, so ashamed, so scared of himself. Cristina and he had to part ways, she was now scared to actually be in the same bed. But the intensity of their feelings for each other didn’t actually end.

It all came to a head when in the last episode, after the break up Hunt had now resorted to being polite, civil, and greeting her with a ‘take care now’, or ‘Good job’ which angered her to no end. She’d had enough! The next couple of minutes in which she confronted Owen in the parking lot, admonishing him, yelling at him for being SO damn civil.. well. Never have the words ‘take care now’ been filled with such passion, and longing. Never have such mundane words been so laden with emotion. And if that wasn’t enough; the fact that Cristina walks off repeating the words.. Chills. Goosebumps. I know I welled up! Did you?

See for yourself; how could you NOT want to just hug this man, and protect him as much as he wants to protect Cristina?

Read, watch, star and comment! Tell me what you think!
